Baltika are at a point where one decision on a defender could seriously change the season. The club is reportedly torn between two options: Moufi from Orenburg and Shnaptsev from Pari NN. One gives a ready-made level right now; the other looks smarter in terms of age and resale. Working out where to look — at the league table or at a three-to-five-year horizon — matters more than simply listing each man's pros and cons.

Fahd Moufi took a normal European route. He grew up in the Lyon system: first the U19s, then 55 matches for the second team, from where he left for playing time in the lower French leagues and in Portugal. Then came Tondela and Portimonense — a perfectly respectable level for a defender who did not become a Lyon regular but did not get lost either.
